Stairs enable easy and safe access between the different floor levels within a building. However it is not always possible, due to space constraints or an awkward building shape or desirable, from an aesthetic or privacy point of view, for a straight run of stairs to be constructed between floors. If this is the case then a solution is required to enable the stairs to change direction, maybe through 90 or even 180 degrees. If there is not sufficient space to provide a conventional half or full landing to facilitate the change in direction then a simple solution is to use winder stairs.
Winder stairs are positioned where a landing would have gone. These staircases are wider at their outer edge than at the inner, resembling a section cut from a pie. Two or more winder steps can be used to replace the landing. If three steps are necessary to turn through 90 degrees, the middle of the three steps is known as the kite winder. Single winder stairs have just one change in direction, whilst double winder stairs have two to enable a 180 degree change in direction.
Winder stairs can be made from timber or metal and are in some cases available “off the shelf”. They can also be custom made to suit your individual requirements and the layout of your home. They can also be constructed from concrete or block work.
Winder stairs are not only a practical solution where space is limited. They can also be a stylish architectural feature in your home.
